COURSE OVERVIEW

A survey of Western History from the earliest civilizations to the beginning of the modern era. Emphasis is placed on the changes through time in political, social, and religious institutions as well as on intellectual and cultural achievements.   The course is designed to help the student to better understand self and society by becoming acquainted with the past history of the Western world.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

¨       To explore and master a broad body of Western Civilization historical knowledge.

 

¨       To develop historical analytical skills needed to critically assess important events and periods in Western Civilization History.

 

¨       Effectively use primary source materials in historical writing and analysis.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Ø      EFFORT (Since this is a college level course is it vitally important to maintain a positive attitude and do the work.)

Ø      Note taking (At this level you should not have to be told to take notes either from class discussion or assigned reading.)

Ø      READ (This requires self discipline. When a reading is assigned it needs to completely read by the assigned date. NO EXCUSES.

Ø      Be Responsible When you are absent it is your duty to get the notes, assignments or materials you missed and make up the missed tests and quizzes and hand any materials/work that was not handed in due to your class absence. Also, for major work like essays and projects if you miss my class but are in school that day the work is considered late. I will not track you down to make up work. Assignments/quizzes/tests not made up will become zeros.

Ø      Lateness is not Acceptable (All work needs to be completed by the assigned date.)

Ø      Participate in class (Do not sit in the stands and watch.)

Ø      DO NOT USE YOUR CELLPHONES IN CLASS!! (Use of your cell phone in and during class will negatively affect your grade.)

Ø      Macbook rules apply!

v      Blue or Black pens (NO work will be accepted in pencil)

 

COURSE GRADE

Your grade will calculated on the following factors:

      Class Participation/Attendance/class work/HW           50%

      Projects/Essays/Test/Quiz                                        50%

Grade for year will be based on the following:    40% 1st Marking Period

                                                                     40% 2nd Marking Period

                                                                     20% Final Exam
